I am undertaking an exercise to scope the provision of specialist dementia care within the NHS and so I would be grateful if you could provide the following information in relation to any Dementia services the Trust offers.

  • The process used to determine size of the service and staffing establishments
  • The role and function of the service
  • The client population served including the population size
  • Staffing establishment and the specific professions represented
  • Referral criteria and any inclusion/exclusion
  • Operational hours
  • Geographical area covered
  • Maximum and average caseload size and how this was determined
  • Average length of contact with the service
  • Service Specification or Operational Policy (if happy to share)
  • Job descriptions (if happy to share)

 

If the Trust has any other specialist dementia positions I would be grateful if you could inform me about:

  • The number of specialist dementia posts for nurses or allied health professionals banded at band 6 or above and what process was used to determine need, number of posts etc
  • Maximum and average caseload sizes for the postholders and how this was determined.

  • Geographical areas covered

We use capacity and demand to determine what the service needs to be along with NICE guidelines

 

The role and function of the service
To diagnose dementia types; investigation and management.

 

The client population served including the population size
450,000

 

Staffing establishment and the specific professions represented
4 geriatricians, neurologist, nurses, allied support (Occupational therapy and Physiotherapy)

 

Referral criteria and any inclusion/exclusion
Symptoms of Dementia

 

Operational hours
24/7 inpatient, 9 - 5 outpatient Mon - Friday

North West Surrey

 

Maximum and average caseload size and how this was determined
The Trust does not hold the maximum and average caseload, however the current caseload is 74. This was determined by referral and patients’ prognosis.

 

Average length of contact with the service
1st appointment:- investigations; 2nd appointment:- follow up for management plan and treatment; 3rd appointment:- 6 months for review
