  4. How many patients admitted to A&E due to a mental health related incident over the last 10 years received in-patient treatment as a result of their visit to A&E? Please could you break the statistics down into the number per year?
     
  5. How many patients admitted to A&E due to a mental health related incident over the last 10 years received some form of out-patient treatment as a result of their visit to A&E? Please could you break the statistics down into the number per year?

Please note the following caveats to the Trust’s response:

Type ‘mental health’ is determined from a combination of the diagnosis, complaint and where a patient is referred to.

Data to derive ‘mental health’ is only available from April 2009. The request asks for 10 years of data, but data from prior to April 2009 would be on a different basis and not comparable.

For Question 7, we can supply only the numbers of patients who have been categorised as ‘mental health’ on more than one attendance during the year; it is not necessarily true that they returned with a ‘similar issue’.

Question 8 is not possible to answer. The Trust does not hold information on whether a patient had previously been diagnosed with a mental health issue.
