  3. The number of emergency and elective ‘inpatient episodes’ belonging to adults aged 65 years or over, within the most recently recorded 12 month period.
  4. Of the number of emergency and elective ‘inpatient episodes’ belonging to adults aged 65 years or over within the most recently recorded 12 month period, how many of these required a domiciliary social care package to be implemented prior to discharge?
  5. The sum of the number of days each inpatient bed was occupied by an adult aged 65 years or over whilst he/she was deemed ‘medically fit for discharge’ but was unable to be discharged due to inadequate social care provision, in the most recently recorded 12 month period. 2) The total number of adult emergency and elective ‘inpatient episodes’ within the most recently recorded 12 month period, excluding maternity (and paediatric) episodes.

  • Elective = 43,345
  • Emergency = 26,657

 

3) The number of emergency and elective ‘inpatient episodes’ belonging to adults aged 65 years or over, within the most recently recorded 12 month period.

  • Elective: 43,208
  • Emergency: 22,874

 

4) Of the number of emergency and elective ‘inpatient episodes’ belonging to adults aged 65 years or over within the most recently recorded 12 month period, how many of these required a domiciliary social care package to be implemented prior to discharge?

Inpatient Episodes of patients aged 65 and over that were a confirmed delay for the reason POC - (S) PACKAGE OF CARE during 2018 = 111

 

5) The sum of the number of days each inpatient bed was occupied by an adult aged 65 years or over whilst he/she was deemed ‘medically fit for discharge’ but was unable to be discharged due to inadequate social care provision, in the most recently recorded 12 month period.

This is the confirmed days for all delays with a delay reason for social services during 2018.

Regarding question 6, the Trust cannot split out the costs of inpatient beds between age profile nor emergency or elective patients.

On a combined emergency / elective inpatient bed cost for patients the average cost per day is:

  • Medical wards £279;
  • Surgical Wards £267; and
  • Orthopaedic Wards £310.
  • Overall £280.
