June 2005 saw the launch of an Applied Biomedical Science Degree (ABMS); delivered through the University of Surrey, in partnership with Surrey & North Sussex Pathology Network. This major new development is designed to produce effective graduates in the field of biomedical science, who will be sufficiently skilled on graduation to work as registered Biomedical Scientists (BMS).

The Pathology Network is formed from a cooperation of acute Trust Pathology departments, including Ashford & St. Peter’s, Frimley Park, Royal Surrey County Hospital and the hospitals comprising the Surrey & Sussex Healthcare Trust (East Surrey & Crawley Hospitals).

The Applied Biomedical Science route is based on the already successful Biomedical Science degree offered by the University of Surrey, but in addition incorporates paid summer placements in one of the local Network laboratories, which prepares the undergraduate for registration with the Health Professions Council.
