Introduction
People at home usually administer medication to themselves. With appropriate checks and controls, it is logical for some hospital inpatients to have custody of, and administer their own medicines. Self-administration encourages patients to take responsibility for their medication, thereby improving concordance on discharge and reducing wastage.
A scheme will be implemented where patients are assessed for their ability to manage their medication. A programme of supervision and education can then be assigned to them, to prepare them for the home situation.
