Introduction
This Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) is to give guidance to doctors, nurses and operational staff utilising the Discharge Lounge to enable them to give appropriate safe and effective care to patients during the discharge phase of their hospital journey. This SOP also covers the use of the Discharge Lounge during periods of capacity escalation in line with the Trust OPEL Plan.
The objectives of the Discharge Lounge are to:
- Enhance the patient journey by providing a safe environment for patients to wait for discharge letter, medication, transport and carers/ relatives;
- Support capacity & flow by freeing up inpatient beds early in the day, allowing patients to be transferred from A&E to the correct place in a timely manner.
Scope
This guidance is relevant to all the Hospital staff involved in the use of the Discharge Lounge and those who support these functions.
