The Commission for Health Improvement (CHI) have announced that Ashford & St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust has been awarded a second star in the 2003 NHS performance ratings - the third year the ratings have been published.

The race against diabetes is on! Behdad Shambayati, Lead Biomedical Scientist in the Cytology Department at Ashford & St. Peter’s Hospitals, is running in the Chicago Marathon on 12th October. He is seeking as many sponsors as possible for the 26.2 mile run to raise money for The Stephanie Marks Appeal. The Appeal was launched in June 2003 to raise £2.5 million to build and equip a specialist diabetes centre for the communities served by Ashford & St. Peter’s Hospitals.

Catherine McCormick, Midwifery Advisor to the Department of Health, has formally opened the refurbished Maternity Unit at St. Peter’s Hospital. The £1.4m project started in the summer of 2002 and was completed in May 2003. Abbey Wing, which is home to the Maternity Unit, was built in 1972.

The role of Ashford & St. Peter’s Hospitals in medical education was put under the spotlight yesterday (Thursday 9th October). Speaking to members of the Trust Board and public, Director of Medical Education Dr. Clare Bennett outlined some of the challenges facing the Trust in providing a learning environment for medical staff.

The offices of nurses, doctors and administrative staff at Ashford & St. Peter’s hospitals have been improved with the donation of surplus furniture from Courage Brewery offices in Staines. The furniture is estimated to be worth £50,000.

Ashford & St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust has welcomed the opening of Westminster Ashford Home. The development, by Westminster Healthcare, will provide beds for elderly frail patients and includes a specialist unit for residents with early dementia.

Guest speaker and celebrity publicist Max Clifford held the audience enthralled at the Ashford League of Friends Annual Meeting on Wednesday 22nd October. Mr Clifford trained as a local newspaper reporter but his career took off when he worked for EMI and handled publicity for a little known mop top band called the Beatles.

Hollywood Night at Shepperton Studios Supports Diabetes Appeal |
Ashford & St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust is inviting local companies and individuals to enjoy a champagne reception whilst mingling with the ‘celebs’ at Shepperton Studios. The reception will be followed by a delightful 3-course dinner, auction and dancing to The Big Harris Whelan Band, until the early hours.

Sale of Diabetes Appeal Christmas Cards Mark World Diabetes Day |
Friday 14th November is World Diabetes Day. It is estimated that around 1.4million people in the UK have the condition – one in 700 children of school age, already have diabetes. World Diabetes Day is organised by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organisation. It celebrates the birthday of Frederick Banting who, with Charles Best, made the first steps towards the discovery of insulin in October 1921. The theme for World Diabetes Day 2003 is ‘Diabetes and kidney disease’.

Role of Volunteers Highlighted in New National Guidance on NHS Chaplaincy |
The important role that volunteers play in providing chaplaincy and spiritual care at Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals has been highlighted in new national guidance published on 5th November. The guidance - ‘NHS Chaplaincy: Meeting the Religious and Spiritual needs of Patients and Staff’ – sets out the framework for the provision of chaplaincy services and is to be used as a good practice guide.

A concert held in aid of the Stephanie Marks Appeal, has raised £600. Hosted by the King’s Church, Staines, supporters filled The Hythe Centre in Egham to listen to the delights of four extremely talented musicians.

Bedside televisions and telephones were announced in May 2000 as part of the national NHS Plan. Ahead of the 2004 deadline for the installation of bedside telephones and televisions Ashford & St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust has already completed installation of the service at Ashford Hospital and work has started on the service at St. Peter’s. No longer do patient’s have to wait for wheelie payphones or TV's and no more do nurses have to field patients calls.

Good progress on the £1.6m fifth operating theatre at Ashford Hospital nr Staines is being made by contractors W T Cuffe and Phase One is now complete. Phase One comprises new staff entrance, two anaesthetics offices; male changing and toilets; female changing and toilets; and a ‘hub’ room. Phase Two which is now underway includes the construction of a 5 bed temporary recovery area and new 10 bed recovery area, two new patient entrances and the transfer of Urology Department offices to a new area on the second floor above the recently completed extension to Day Surgery.

Seventeen patients and carers have joined the pilot Patients’ Panel at Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust. The Trust had planned for a panel of 15 members but so many good candidates applied that 17 members were selected from a wide cross section of the local community served by Ashford and St. Peter’s hospitals.

“The response to the consultation on shaping the future of local health services has been encouraging” says North Surrey Primary Care Trust Chief Executive Nick Yeo. “A variety of people have attended our public meetings which have been held so far in Feltham, Hersham, Shepperton, Staines, and Woking. A number of important issues have been raised and it has been invaluable to hear directly from local people regarding their questions and concerns. We are only part-way through this consultation process with more public meetings to come and we would encourage as many people as possible to come along and discuss our proposals with us.”
