RAOB Grand Lodge of England Creates Lapel Badge in Support of Diabetes |
Membership of The Grand Lodge of England is open to all adult males without distinction to social position, religious faiths or political beliefs. Each year the RAOB (Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes) gain joy and satisfaction by supporting one another, sharing the burdens and providing whatever is required to meet the needs of a less fortunate ‘Brother’ - even the dependant widow and children of a deceased Brother.

Daisy Boast Returns to Neo Natal Unit at St Peter’s with a Cheque for £2,000 |
On Friday 24th February, Daisy Boast, now two years old, returned to the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit at St. Peter’s Hospital where she was born, with her grandparents and representatives from Chertsey Rotary Club and Thorpe Park, with a cheque for ₤2,000!

Novo Nordisk Gives the Stephanie Marks Diabetes Appeal a £25,000 boost |
The goal of building and equipping a dedicated diabetes resource centre in the grounds of St. Peter’s hospital moved another step forward this week with the Stephanie Marks Diabetes Appeal receiving a £25,000 donation from Novo Nordisk, the leading diabetes care company.

‘Please don’t smoke here!’ That’s the message being given out at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals as they prepare to go totally smoke free from 8th March, National No Smoking Day. This means that smoking will not be permitted anywhere on hospital premises, including outside buildings and in the grounds.

The Stephanie Marks Appeal’s recent Living with Diabetes Day was a great success. Hosted by Sir William Perkins’s School in Chertsey, where Steph had been a student, 150 attendees enjoyed a day of “information and inspiration”. Whilst the primary aim of the day was to raise awareness of diabetes and educate people with the condition, their families, friends and carers, the day also raised around £7,000 clear.

Since January 2006, there have been (as of Friday 16th June) 108 confirmed or epidemiologically linked cases of measles within Surrey, with high concentrations in the Spelthorne, Woking and Waverley areas. 17 of these cases have been in adults over the age of 20.

Chaucer Ward has been officially re-opened, on 20th June. The ward has undergone a series of refurbishments that have taken three months, at a cost of around £180,000. The ward is now a fully equipped rehabilitation ward specialising in stroke patients.

Students from Tormead School, Guildford have spent the last few months collecting pennies from neighbours, friends & family. Last weekend, all the children from Lansdown Road, Jasmine, Leila, Sam, Ross, Dudley, Alex and James (aged from 3-14 years), lined the street with 10,933 pennies.

In order to use our resources most efficiently and maximise the use of all areas some services have been moved from one hospital site to the other. For example in our reconfiguration of services earlier this year, Day Surgery and rehabilitation services are now concentrated at Ashford, while emergency services are concentrated at St. Peter’s. As a result of reconfiguration there are other services that now need to be reviewed to ensure that we maintain efficiency across all areas. One of the most recent services to be reviewed has been the pharmacy at both hospitals.

Diabetes has been described as a catastrophe waiting to happen which will overwhelm the NHS. Although the increase in diabetes and its complications is alarming, much of this burden could be prevented with early detection, improved delivery of care and better education on diabetes self-management.
