Thanks to the hard work and generosity of local fundraisers, a further £11,000 has been raised for the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit at St Peter’s Hospital. This has enabled the department to buy one of the latest high tech intensive care incubators, which was celebrated today by Daisy Boast and her family and the Chertsey Rotary Club, who have been raising money for the unit through their ‘Daisy Appeal’.

Local charities show their support for Children’s Department |
The children’s play area at St Peter’s Hospital has recently received several generous donations from local charities. Just last week, the charity Thyme at the Tavern, donated a whole range of exciting toys and games bought from money raised through local events such as auctions and carol services, and support from local businesses.

When people come to hospital they need to feel confident they will be well looked after which clearly didn’t happen on this occasion and is, quite simply, inexcusable. The family of local lady Eileen George, who died last October aged nearly 80, have praised staff at St Peter’s Hospital for their Mum’s care in the last weeks of her life. Instead of flowers at Eileen’s funeral, the family asked for donations so they could purchase some additional equipment for the hospital in her memory.

Staff working at Ashford and St Peter’s hospitals rate the trust as one of the best hospital employers in the country according to the latest NHS staff survey results. Published this week by the Care Quality Commission, the results show that staff at Ashford and St Peter’s are amongst the most motivated 20% in the country and that they also rate the Trust as one of the top 20% for job satisfaction and as somewhere to work and receive treatment.

Head girl Natalia Rana and fellow pupil Lauren Pickering from St Peter’s School in Guildford presented a donation of £1,000 to the neonatal intensive care unit at St Peter’s Hospital last week. The money was raised at the school’s Rag Week in March with the hospital’s neonatal unit chosen as this year’s charity after the excellent care experienced by two teachers at the school who both had babies cared for in the unit.

On Monday the Mayor of Runnymede, Councillor Margaret Roberts, joined 20 other guests of Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals to officially open a new garden and seating area at the front of St Peter’s. Central to the garden, designed by local garden designer Richard Jackson, is the sculpture called Lightwaves by local artist Duncan Bell. On cutting the ribbon the Mayor expressed her delight in the garden and her passion for healing therapies in hospital such as music and art.

Last week the vascular team at St Peter’s Hospital, led by consultant surgeon Mr Tahir Ali, performed the Trust’s first keyhole aneurysm repair. This is emergency, life saving surgery, yet the patient was up and about within hours and able to leave hospital within only 48 hours.

St. Peter’s Hospital is proud to announce a new 9 bed Special Care Unit for mothers and their babies. The new SCU is replacing the old 6 bed transitional care unit and will be part of, and managed by, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It will be staffed by neonatal nurses and led by Sister Therese Nursey.

Improvements to Trust catering services - for patients, visitors and staff |
Deputy Chief Executive at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Valerie Bartlett, comments: “The catering contract we have with our current supplier is due to be re-tendered shortly and gives us an opportunity to significantly improve and modernise our current catering facilities for patients, visitors and staff. For example, we would very much like to bring all our public restaurant facilities into the main building at St Peter’s hospital – more convenient for both visitors and staff - which would mean a major capital development. At Ashford we would like to provide a smaller, better located restaurant facility in the main entrance with a new tea and snack bar in our main outpatient department which is due to be refurbished next year.

From Friday 9 September, St Peter’s Hospital will be able to offer a new bariatric surgical procedure to patients who need a gastric bypass. Such patients, who need to lose weight in order to maintain a healthy life, will benefit from being able to have the surgery locally in Chertsey.

Last Friday, consultant surgeon Mr Samer Humadi and his team at Ashford and St Peter’s hospitals, undertook the Trust’s first ever gastric bypass operation. This represents a significant development in specialist weight loss surgery offered by the Trust and means they will be attracting patients from a much wider catchment area for this specialist service.

Mobile British Sign Language Computers now available at Trust |
Ashford & St Peter’s Hospitals have recently received the delivery of three mobile and height adjustable computers for patients who need a British Sign Language service. There will be two of these computers at St Peter’s, with one in A&E and the other on Abbey Wing, and one at Ashford in the Outpatients department.

A new hospital mortality indicator – published last week by the NHS Information Centre - shows Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation trust is a safe hospital trust, with a lower than expected mortality index. The Trust received a score of 90 [where 100 would be the expected level], which takes into account of variables such as age, type of illness, social demography and other factors.

Since 1st May this year, Ashford and St Peter’s have been running a new physiotherapy service specifically for staff. The new service, run in conjunction with the Trust’s Occupational Health department, offers staff members easy access to assessment and treatment. This includes a weekly drop-in clinic, which gives hospital employees the opportunity to take responsibility for their own health without having to take time off work.

Trust Medical Director Dr Mike Baxter, comments: “We welcome Dr Foster’s Good Hospital Guide which, importantly, demonstrates continued low mortality rates at Ashford and St Peter’s across a range of conditions. The new Summary Hospital-level Mortality Index published by Dr Foster reports a score of 90 for the Trust [where 100 would be the expected level], taking into account variables like age, type of illness, demography and other factors. Tottenham Hotspur makes a donation to Chaucer Ward at Ashford Hospital |
On the 8th November, Lisa Thomas (Ward Manager) and Lynn English (Ward PA) from Chaucer Ward at Ashford Hospital were invited down to White Hart Lane, home of Tottenham Hotspur, to receive a cheque for £2,500. This money was donated by Spurs for some photographs of the famous sixties football player Danny Blanchflower that were originally given to Chaucer Ward to sell.

The Tiggers Room, for children aged three to five, in the First Steps Nursery at St Peter's Hospital, was recently re-audited and received a score of 6.4 out of 7 for the ECERS E Environment Rating Scale, which specifically looks at learning and development in early years. This figure is much higher than the average ECERS E score across Surrey, which was at 3.29 on 31st March 2010, and is a great improvement on their first audit score of 3.5 in 2009.

A family from Addlestone fundraised over £5,500 to help sick and premature babies at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey. Lauren White, along with her family and friends, hosted a Fun Day at the Jubilee High School in Addlestone which included a football match and fete which raised just over £4,000 with the remainder being raised through the family’s Just Giving webpage.
