Any person attending the Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (The Trust) should be able to do so feeling safe from harm. Any allegations that a person working in the Trust, paid or unpaid, has, by their own action, breached this value will be taken seriously by the Trust.

This policy is for all staff, contractors, volunteers and students working within the Trust, at both its main hospital sites and within its community facilities. The Trust is a partner of the Surrey Safeguarding Adults and Children’s Board. As such the Trust has a responsibility to provide assurance that appropriate procedures are in place to support staff and patients.

This policy will be the main reference document in all cases in which a person has alleged to have behaved in a way that has harmed, committed a criminal offence or shown that they are of unsuitable character to work with vulnerable people.

The management of allegations against any adult who works with patients are outlined in the Multi-Agency processes and procedures, which are overseen by Surrey County Council. The Safeguarding Boards set out how the Trust will work with other agencies and organisations to safeguard those people at risk.

The Trust is required to fulfil its obligations, as part of safer recruitment, to report to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). These obligations follow the Bichard Inquiry, The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 and Protection of Freedoms Act 2012. The Trust also has a legal duty to fulfil both the legal duties under Section 11 of the Children and Families Act 2014 and the statutory responsibilities detailed in Working Together to Safeguard Children (2013).

This policy and its procedures apply to all staff working in either a paid or unpaid capacity, as a substantive member of staff, temporary/agency staff, contract worker, consultant, student or volunteer.
